Large-scale structure and galaxy colours

Large-scale structure and galaxy colours

A zoom into one of the regions of the Universe mapped by VIPERS. Here galaxy intrinsic colours add further information on their stellar content and their properties in relation to the surrounding large-scale structure. The relation between galaxy colours and local density, one of the main properties of galaxies in the local Universe, is seen here to be already in place 7 billion year ago: old, red galaxies trace the ridges and knots of large-scale structure, while green/blue younger objects, in which stars are still forming, are distributed more uniformly.
